As The Band Marches On

These days I march with the band

Beat by beat

I speak through them

The stories of my life told through their performance

I am afraid the band will leave me

That my stories will fade away

And all the joy I had

Will keep walking with them

I want people to know my joy

To walk with me in tandem love for the art of life

I don’t want to be the old man waxing nostalgically

As if he has had all his fun

Yet I know one day my story will be told

And the band will march on without me

As I sit in my home, old and alone

Listening to the themes of my life retold

One day now will be a long time ago

As the band marches on, I keep in tow
